What is Tart Cherry?
Tart cherry (Prunus cerasus), particularly the Montmorency variety, is a sour cherry species prized for its exceptionally high concentration of anthocyanins, polyphenols, and naturally occurring melatonin. Tart cherry extract and juice concentrate have become one of the most popular natural remedies for sleep, recovery, and joint health.
Natural Melatonin Source
Tart cherries are one of the few natural food sources of melatonin. Studies show that tart cherry juice consumption increases urinary melatonin levels and improves sleep duration and quality. Unlike supplemental melatonin, tart cherry provides melatonin within a complex matrix of synergistic compounds.
Exercise Recovery
Multiple clinical trials demonstrate that tart cherry extract reduces markers of exercise-induced muscle damage, decreases delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and accelerates strength recovery after intense exercise. Marathon runners, cyclists, and resistance athletes have all shown benefits in controlled studies.
Uric Acid and Joint Health
Tart cherry's anthocyanins inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes (similar to NSAIDs but without side effects) and may help maintain healthy uric acid levels. Research shows tart cherry consumption is associated with reduced frequency of gout flares by up to 35%.
Anthocyanin Profile
Tart cherries contain at least 17 different anthocyanin compounds, with cyanidin-3-glucoside being the most abundant. These give tart cherries their deep red color and provide antioxidant potency comparable to many well-known superfruits.
Forms
Available as concentrated juice, extract capsules, dried fruit, and powder. Extract capsules provide the most consistent anthocyanin dosing. Juice concentrate (1 oz = ~50-60 cherries) is popular for sleep support when taken 30-60 minutes before bed.
