What is MCT Oil?
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are fats with carbon chains of 6-12 atoms. Unlike long-chain fats (most dietary fats), MCTs are rapidly absorbed and transported directly to the liver, where they're quickly converted to energy or ketones.
Rapid Energy
MCTs bypass normal fat digestion and go straight to your liver via the portal vein. This means they're available for energy within minutes—making them popular for athletes and those following ketogenic diets.
Ketone Production
The liver converts MCTs to ketones even when carbohydrates are present in the diet. This provides an alternative brain fuel and is being studied for cognitive support, especially in conditions affecting glucose metabolism in the brain.
Types of MCTs
C8 (caprylic acid) is the most ketogenic MCT, converting most efficiently to ketones. C10 (capric acid) also produces ketones but more slowly. C12 (lauric acid) behaves more like a long-chain fat.
Usage Tips
Start with small amounts (1 teaspoon) and increase gradually—too much too fast can cause digestive discomfort. MCT oil is colorless and tasteless, making it easy to add to coffee, smoothies, or dressings.
