What is Manganese?
Manganese is a trace mineral that activates enzymes involved in metabolism, bone formation, and antioxidant defense. Your body contains about 10-20 mg of manganese, concentrated in bones, liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
Antioxidant Defense
Manganese is a component of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), a critical antioxidant enzyme that protects mitochondria from oxidative damage. This makes it essential for healthy aging and cellular energy production.
Bone Health
Manganese is required for the synthesis of proteoglycans, structural components of bone and cartilage. Deficiency may contribute to impaired bone development and osteoporosis.
Blood Sugar Metabolism
Manganese is involved in gluconeogenesis (producing glucose from non-carbohydrate sources) and may influence insulin sensitivity. Some research suggests it plays a role in blood sugar regulation.
Food Sources
Whole grains, nuts, legumes, tea, and leafy vegetables are good sources. Refined grains lose much of their manganese content during processing.
