What is Iodine?
Iodine is a trace mineral that's essential for the production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). These hormones regulate metabolism, growth, development, and body temperature. Without iodine, thyroid hormone production is impossible.
Thyroid Health
Your thyroid gland actively concentrates iodine from your blood—up to 100 times the blood concentration. This iodine is then used to synthesize T4 and T3, which affect virtually every cell in your body.
Pregnancy and Development
Iodine is critical during pregnancy and infancy for brain development. Severe deficiency causes cretinism, a condition of irreversible intellectual disability. Even mild deficiency during pregnancy can affect children's IQ.
Deficiency vs Excess
Both too little and too much iodine can cause thyroid problems. Deficiency leads to hypothyroidism and goiter; excess can also trigger thyroid dysfunction, especially in those with pre-existing thyroid conditions.
Sources
Iodized salt is the primary source for many people. Seafood (especially seaweed), dairy, and eggs also contain iodine. Sea vegetables like kelp are extremely rich but can provide excessive amounts.
