What is Chromium?
Chromium is a trace mineral that enhances the action of insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. It's found in two forms: trivalent chromium (the form found in foods and supplements, which is safe) and hexavalent chromium (an industrial toxin).
Insulin Function
Chromium potentiates insulin's effects by improving insulin receptor sensitivity. This means your body can use insulin more efficiently to move glucose from blood into cells where it's needed for energy.
Blood Sugar Management
Research suggests chromium supplementation may benefit people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes by improving fasting blood glucose and HbA1c levels. For healthy individuals, effects are less pronounced.
Chromium and Cravings
Some research suggests chromium may help reduce carbohydrate cravings and appetite, possibly by improving blood sugar stability and neurotransmitter function.
Supplementation Forms
Chromium picolinate is the most common and well-studied form. Other forms include chromium polynicotinate and chromium chloride. Absorption from supplements is generally low (less than 3%).
