What is Boswellia?
Boswellia serrata, commonly known as Indian frankincense, is a tree resin used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. Its active compounds, boswellic acids, have potent anti-inflammatory properties distinct from NSAIDs.
5-LOX Inhibition
Unlike most anti-inflammatories that target COX enzymes, boswellia's boswellic acids specifically inhibit 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), blocking the production of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes. AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) is the most active compound.
Joint Health
Clinical trials show boswellia can reduce joint pain, improve mobility, and decrease cartilage damage markers. Effects are often noticeable within 1-2 weeks, faster than glucosamine.
Synergy with Turmeric
Boswellia and turmeric target different inflammatory pathways, making them synergistic. Many joint formulas combine both for comprehensive anti-inflammatory support.
Standardization
Look for extracts standardized to AKBA content (typically 10-40%). Some advanced extracts like ApresFlex and 5-Loxin offer enhanced bioavailability.
